Pray when…

Pray when…

Pray when…

I don’t know about you, but there are too many moments in life when I try to do things in my own strength. And when the pressure gets too much, the problem gets too hard and it all seems impossible… when all else fails, I pray.

I’m sure you know what I’m talking about.

But what if…?

What if instead of going through all that, we were to stop and seek God first?

What if we sought God in every situation?

What if we were fully surrendered to the God who holds the universe in His hands?

His will, His way.

I imagine it would look something like this…

“Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in Him. He alone is my rock and salvation, my fortress where I will not be shaken.  My victory and honour come from God alone. He is my refuge, a rock where no enemy can reach me. O my people, trust in him at all times. Pour out your heart to him, for God is our refuge.” Psalm 62:5-8

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

That seems a lot more appealing to me than stomach ulcers, grey hair and strained relationships!

This month we’ve been talking about developing a practice of prayer… or a plan to communicate with God anytime, anywhere, for any reason.  I would like to look at a bunch of reasons to pray and help us to move from a “when all else fails” mentality, to a “seek God at all times” mentality.

It is my prayer that through this we would experience the peace and power that comes when we rely on God’s strength rather than our own.

Pray when you’re pathless

“Show me the right path, O Lord; point out the road for me to follow. Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you.” Psalms 25:4-5

“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” Psalms 119:105

Pray when you’re powerless

“Then Asa cried out to the Lord his God, ‘O Lord, no one but you can help the powerless against the mighty! Help us, O Lord our God, for we trust in you alone. It is in your name that we have come against this vast horde. O Lord, you are our God; do not let mere men prevail against you!’” 2 Chronicles 14:11

Pray when you’re pained

“He was the one who prayed to the God of Israel, ‘Oh, that you would bless me and expand my territory! Please be with me in all that I do, and keep me from all trouble and pain!’ And God granted him his request.” 1 Chronicles 4:10

Pray when you’re perplexed

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

“But in my distress I cried out to the Lord; yes, I prayed to my God for help. He heard me from his sanctuary; my cry to him reached his ears.” Psalms 18:6

Pray when you’re passionate

“I tell you the truth, you can say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen. But you must really believe it will happen and have no doubt in your heart. I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours.” Mark 11:23-24

Pray when you’re persecuted

“But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you!” Matthew 5:44

Pray when you’re in private

“But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.” Matthew 6:6

Pray when you’re in public

“Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening.” Acts 16:25

Pray when you’re prompted

“Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.” Ephesians 6:18

“Ask me and I will tell you remarkable secrets you do not know about things to come.” Jeremiah 33:3

Pray when He’s present, which is always (so pray without ceasing!)

“Always be joyful. Never stop praying.  Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
