A Personal Relationship

I was asked to share a message about what communion means to me, I can sum it up in one word, relationship.

But I’ll expand a little on what that means to me. A way has been made for us to have a personal relationship with God!

No more blood sacrifices and unachievable rules to have to follow perfectly or receive the death penalty. For this was the old way……God through His son Jesus made a new way.

It’s wasn’t just a cool tale, it really happened. The gospels document how Jesus was born as a child, lived as a man, and performed many wonders and miracles during His short life. He was despised by the religious leaders and was betrayed by Judas into the hands of those who hated Him.

He was innocent, yet pronounced guilty. He was sentenced to death, punished for our sins, and died a criminal’s death.

For what purpose? Why such brutality?

“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.” John 3:16 -17 (NLT)

The purpose was so we could be covered under grace, the ability to come boldly to God. We can now have relationship with God.

“So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive His mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” Hebrews 4:16 (NLT)

God loves us. He desires a personal relationship with each one of us. And the most amazing part is there is now nothing we have to do… but come!

And that my friends, I believe, is where a lot of us come unstuck….

Is there really nothing I have to pay or do to receive his forgiveness? Can a no obligation kind of love really exist? I don’t value myself that much, so why would a God who can have anyone choose me?

We feel that there must be more to the story. There must be some small print that we missed.

Well the good news of having a personal relationship with God is real.

Romans 10:9 -10 tells us:

“If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.”

This personal relationship is something we can all have right now. And it can grow and flourish as you spend time with Him, getting to know Him.

So when I take the bread that symbolises the brokenness, the punishment Jesus took for me, I smile and thank Him for relationship. And when I drink the juice that symbolises the blood that He willingly poured out, I rejoice because His sacrifice bought reconciliation between us all and God.

For those who regularly spend time with God, there is so much more that He wants to share with you.

For those who have been too busy with life to stop and connect with God, today is your day to reconnect again.

And For those who don’t really know God, He promises that if you seek Him, you will find Him. Seek him today while He can be found. He is good!
